M5 Communicator is M5's new unified communications tool to help you get business done faster. M5 Communicator is a full unified communications solution. With presence, instant messaging, voice and video chat, and screen sharing, increase your productivity by streamlining communications in one easy-to-use interface.

Features

  • Contact List: Every M5 Communicator user in your organization, as well as your custom contact groups will be shown inside your contact list. M5 Communicator does not support defaulted or pre-defined generic user groups. However, you can custom create your own. To search contacts use the search bar at the top of the Communicator Contact List.
  • Presence: See your colleagues’ status in the contact list. Know whether they’re available to chat or if they’re on the phone. There is no need to update your status, M5 Communicator updates it for you.
  • Instant Messaging: With one click, users are able to chat with each other regardless of geographical location.
  • Video Chat Video Chat (peer-to-peer): With M5 Communicator, users can have face-to-face conversations with one another whether they’re in the same office or around the world.
  • Voice Chat (peer-to-peer): M5 Communicator's built-in voice functionality allows users to voice chat.
  • Desktop share: With M5 Communicator you can launch a desktop sharing session during an audio or video chatting session. Share your entire screen for collaboration activities like working on documents. You can also choose which portion of your screen you would like to share.
  • File transfer: M5 Communicator let’s you send large files to any M5 Communicator user during an initiated chat.
  • Group Chat: Chat with multiple users at once and in the same window.
  • AutoUpdate: M5 Communicator automatically keeps you up-to-date and up-to-speed with automatic software updates.


Requirements

  • M5CC Managed M5 Profile
  • Windows XP and newer (both 32 bit and 62 bit machines are supported)
  • Mac OS X 10.5 and newer

Download and Installation

As of March 30, 2012, M5 Communicator is available to clients upon request. Before installation, authorized contacts should contact support for activation.

3) Log into M5 Communicator using your M5 phone number and phone password

4) Your contact list with coworkers will be loaded automatically. You’re ready to IM, video chat, screen share and more


Requesting the service

Authorized contacts can contact support for M5 Communicator for activation, after that M5 Communicator must be installed.

Usage and Management

Log In

  • To log into M5 Communicator, use your M5 phone number and phone password


Presence (Status Messages)

  1. When you are logged into M5 Communicator, your status is automatically updated to Online on your colleagues' contact list
  2. When you are using an M5 business telephone, your status is automatically updated to On the Phone
  3. To change your presence status, click the Online drop down menu at the top of your M5 Communicator


Instant Messaging

  1. To chat with a colleague, double click on their name in your contact list.
  2. In the new chat window you can type, in real time, back and forth
  3. When you’re done, close the window
  4. When someone sends you a chat, a notification window will appear, and you can click on that to open the chat window.


Audio and Video Chat

A microphone and speakers are required for audio chat and a webcam is required for video chat.

  1. To start audio chat, click the telephone icon under a contact in the contact list
  2. To start video chat, click the movie camera icon under a contact in the contact list

If you are experiencing trouble with your webcam, microphone, or speakers, go to the Tools > Options > Audio and Tools > Options > Video to adjust your settings


Screen Sharing

You can also use M5 Communicator to share screens with a coworker.

  1. To start screen sharing, click the screen share icon under the name in the contact list

File Transfer

M5 Communicator supports transferring files between your contacts.

  1. To start a file transfer, click the file transfer icon at the top of the screen during a chat


Updating your M5 Communicator

M5 Communicator will prompt you at sign-on if your client needs to updated or you can manually check for updates.


PC

  1. From inside you contact list choose “Help”-->”Check for Updates” from the top of the screen


Mac

  1. Choose “M5 Communicator” next to the “Apple” icon, then “Check for Updates”

FAQs

Presence

Q: What are the colored dots at the top of my contact list? And What do the colors mean?
A: The colored dots, (red, green, and yellow) are a visual indicator of your set status.

  • Green means available
  • Yellow means idle
  • Red means that this person is unavailable

Q: How do I set my status to away?
A: Please see the “Presence” instructions

Q:Why do I have two statuses?
A: M5 Communicator logs into an instant message client as well as sip softphone


Instant Messaging

Q: How do I change my contact list picture?
A: Right click on your existing picture in your contact list, a drop down will appear, choose your desired picture option.

Q: Can I chat with someone outside of my organization using M5 Communicator?
A: This feature is not supported. However, you can add additional account options under File > Add new account

Q: Is my chat history logged?
A: Yes, it is.

Q: Can I assign my contacts nicknames?
A: Yes you can. Simply right click the contact to rename


Voice Chat

Q: Where are the call recording stored?
A: Call recordings are downloaded and saved. When you are done recording a dialog box pops up, that allows the user to save the file in the location of their choosing.

Q: Can I 4 digit dial using M5 Communicator?
A: No

Q: How do I control my M5 Cisco IP Phone using M5 Communicator?
A: Unfortunately, the current version of M5 Communicator does not support call control. Future versions will support call control.


General Questions

Q: Is there a limit to how many users may use this service at one location? Does it require additional bandwidth?
A: No.

Q: How do I make sure that my Communicator client is up to date?
A: M5 Communicator will prompt you at sign on if you need to upgrade, additionally you can update using these instructions.
